Return to Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday Roll-Up
TTS Christmas Jumper Day 2020
Despite all the trials and tribulations of 2020, the recently combined Tuseday/Thursday and Saturday roll-ups (now renamed the TTS Roll-up) still managed to hold their traditional Christmas Jumper Day on Saturday 19th December 2020. For a closer look at the resultant sartorial extravaganza see the album below.
Despite a passing hail storm and some very wet conditions, particularly on the front 9 of the Blue course, most participants had a good, socially-distanced time - the golf being largely incidental as usual.
Hugh Chamberlain Trophy 2020 & 2021
Tony Tompkins wins the Hugh Chamberlain Trophy 2020.
Following the disruption to regular TT Roll-up outings caused by the closure of Frilford Heath GC during the two periods of lockdown and otherwise by the restrictions necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic during the year, it was agreed that the Hugh Chamberlain Trophy 2020 should be awarded on the basis of the best average Stableford score during the period January to March combined with the results of the three month summer competition.
On this basis the clear winner was Tony Tompkins with an average of 34.39 points (18 rounds) during January - March and an average of 35.70 (18 rounds) during the summer competition.
In the hope and anticipation that recreational golf will return to something like normality during 2021, it has been provisionally agreed that the Hugh Chamberlain Trophy 2021 will be awarded on the basis of the best 25 Stableford scores (total, not average) in TTS Roll-up outings between 1st January and 11th December 2021.
Post-Lockdown Arrangements for TTS Roll-up
The following arrangements will apply for the TTS Roll-up on Saturdays (similar arrangements are in place for Tuesdays and Thursdays) initially for a trial period starting in April 2021, now that Frilford Heath GC’s courses are open again :
There are five lead names to make the online bookings at 8.30am on the nail. These are Eddie Wragg, Ken Morris, David Parker, Mike Moulding and Tony Tompkins.
Lead names are advised of their actual playing partners, which will be drawn out randomly from the list of those wishing to play kept by the designated organiser #. This will be done approximately three weeks before the day we play. Then they will know what names to enter, and hopefully there will not be too many changes.
All lead names to notify the designated organiser # what tee time they have booked, so that he can send out the actual group names / tee times approximately five days before play.
In general, every effort is being made to book tee times between 10.30am to 11.00am, plus one at 12.00 ( Mike Moulding ).
Bob Thompson
Bob Thompson, long-time stalwart of the TT Roll-up, has recently announced his retirement from roll-up golf following his decision to relinquish his full playing rights at Frilford Heath GC with effect from April 2020.
Bob will remain a social member of the Club and will, of course, be welcome, assuming we all survive the present coronavirus crisis, to make the occasional guest appearance as and when the mood takes him and he needs to augment his pension at the expense of the rest of us.
Starting Time Change
Following the return of British Summer Time on Sunday 29th March, the TT Roll-up will revert to its normal summer starting time of 12.30 pm with effect from Tuesday 31st March 2020.
Coronavirus (Covid-19) arrangements - updated 14-3-20
For obvious reasons, the following arrangements have been overtaken by events and no longer apply.
Pursuant to the advice of the Government and the Club, the following arrangements have been agreed for the continuation of the TT Roll-up for as long as that is possible/advisable:
(a) the TT Roll-up to continue to take place (subject to the restrictions advised by the Club and the application of social distancing measures as appropriate), unless the Club closes or stronger advice is issued by the Government;
(b) those golfers who are in vulnerable categories (notably over 70s and/or those with underlying health conditions) to consider very carefully whether they should participate, even taking all necessary precautions;
(c) alternative arrangements to be adopted for drawing for partners/flights (ie not balls in a hat, but a procedure involving no physical contact);
(d) local rules and common sense to be applied as necessary to deal with unraked bunkers, absence of pins on greens, upturned cups, etc;

TT Roll-up Xmas Lunch 2019
The 2019 TT Roll-up Xmas Lunch held on Sunday 15th December saw the largest turnout for several years being attended by some 40 TT Roll-up regulars and their partners.
The excellent 2 or 3 course carvery lunch, with table quiz, was followed by coffee, mince pies and chocolates in the Skelton Room. Here Master of Ceremonies, Mike Whitwell, wished everyone good cheer and invited Nigel French to give his usual run-down of the TT Roll-up’s activities during 2019.
Nigel duly reported on participation in regular TT Roll-up outings and the various competitions organised during the year, including the 3-Club Challenge in February, the Burford Senior Captain’s Charity Golf Day in March and the match between teams from the TT Roll-up and the EGGS in October.
All agreed with Nigel’s assertion that the Frilford courses had again been in excellent condition throughout the year, apart from the ongoing problems involving some of the bunkers and the paths.
On the subject of calendar clashes, Nigel noted that the Club’s golfing management were endeavouring to give more priority to members over visiting societies and external competitions and were continuing to assist with the arrangements made following the long-standing “entente cordiale” between the TT Roll-up and the EGGS during the winter months.
Hugh Chamberlain Trophy 2019
Congratulations to Stuart Rushworth, winner of the Hugh Chamberlain Trophy for 2019.

A total of 26 players qualified for the Trophy competition by playing at least 20 times with the TT Roll-up during the calendar year 2019. Of these 19 scored an average of 30 pts or better and of these 6 scored 32 pts or more:

TT Roll-up vs EGGS match 15-10-19
The fourth match between teams from the TT Roll-up and the EGGS was held on Tuesday 15th October 2019 on the Green course.
The TT Roll-up team, comprising 7 pairs of TT regulars, successfully defended the EGG Cup (pictured) by 4 1/2 pts to 2 1/2.
The EGGS captain had to make some late changes in his team, through injury and other reasons, and even had to call on one of the TT Roll-up reserves to fill a last minute vacancy. In the true spirit of camaraderie and good will that typifies these encounters, the TT Roll-up reserve, playing off a newly reduced TT Roll-up handicap, contributed significantly to one of the EGGS’ wins.
Two other matches went to the 18th hole, one ending in a +1 win for the TT Roll-up team and the other being halved.
Full team lists, order of play and scores can be seen here.
The weather was kind - an oasis of dry weather amid a period of almost continuous rain - and the course conditions were near perfect, remarkably so given the amount of water the courses have had to absorb over recent weeks.
Starting Time Change
Following the return of British Summer Time on Sunday 31st March 2019, the TT Roll-up will revert to its normal summer starting time of 12.30 pm with effect from Tuesday 2nd April 2019.
Burford Senior Captain’s Charity Day 2019
A total of 10 Frilford members, among them eight TT Roll-up regulars, played in the Burford Senior Captain’s Charity Day on Thursday 28th March 2019. (The full turnout was 96 from more than thirty clubs.)
Burford Golf Club 18th looking towards Clubhouse
Two TT Roll-up regulars, Rob Kennedy and Paul Richards, were part of the team that came second with 117 pts (best 3 of 4 to count). The winning score was 118 pts so they only just missed out on the top spot and Paul won one of the Nearest the Pin prizes as well, thereby maintaining the excellent record of success achieved by TT Roll-up members over the past few years in this event.
Given that the weather was also perfect, the course in reasonable condition for March and the food (coffee and bacon baps beforehand, cakes at the halfway house and the post match meal) was excellent as usual, it would be fair to say that a good time was had by all.
3-Club Challenge - Report
Congratulations are due to Paul Williams (left) who won the first TT Roll-up 3-Club Challenge competition of 2019 with an impressive score of 40 Stableford points.
Playing with a 5-wood, a couple of short irons and a putter, Paul clearly found the benign weather and course conditions on the Green course to his liking. His round, perhaps surprisingly, included no birdies, but did comprise 11 pars and also, importantly, no blobs. He did not go in a single bunker either - a feat in its own right on the Green course.
Among the other participants, more than half had scores of better than 30 pts, once again giving the lie to the need to haul all those sets of 14 gleaming clubs around the course.
The best of the rest was Shaun Gavaghan with 34 pts. Shaun was playing his first full found since a heart operation, so his recovery is obviously going well.
Paul generously donated his winnings to Bob Headon’s Saturday charity collection.

The TT Roll-up will play a 3-Club Challenge competition on Valentine’s Day - Thursday 14th February 2019 on the Green course.
