This series of eight cards was sold in a special envelope (pictured right) to celebrate the early life of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, who reigned from 1888 until his abdication in 1918. The cards in this particular set were all posted in Amsterdam in March 1902 to the same person and address in Amsterdam (presumably the buyer of the cards).
The individual cards show the Kaiser on a journey to the north, at work in his office, in Wartburg Castle, with the Empress on a visit to Palestine, visiting the hereditary seat of the Hohenzollerns, in procession into Strasburg, boarding the SMS “Weissenburg” (one of the first ocean-going battleships of the Imperial German Navy) and inspecting the SMS “Brandenburg” (the lead ship in the Brandenburg-class pre-dreadnought battleships built for the Imperial German Navy in the 1890s) prior to her departure for China.
