HAGS/PWDGS-UK 2009

Old friends reunited

L-R :  Alan Milne, John Herbert, Eric Wood, Harry Martin,  Alan Green, Roger Thomas,  John Boyd, Leslie Thompson, Nigel French, Roger Thomas, Tony Lawrence,  Bryan White,        Mike Harley

I hope all concerned enjoyed the outing to Wokefield Park on 5/6 August.  We were fortunate with the weather.  Thanks to the HAGS Chairman's hot-line to the weather gods, the rain affecting other parts of the country stayed away for both rounds.

The course was interesting, just over 6,500 yards from the yellow tees with some well-placed hazards and some punishing rough waiting for those who strayed too far from the straight and narrow.  For those with an antipathy for water, the 12th was particularly challenging.  On the few occasions we were actually on them, the fairways and greens were in good condition.

The golf was generally up (down?) to HAGS/PWDGS standards, as the results below show.  Producing the excellent Texas Scramble scores obviously required considerable care and attention, as testified by the five and a half hours they took to compile!

Day 1 Texas Scramble

Winners: Team 1 (Boyd, Green, Thompson, Harley) 73 gross

Runners-up: Team 3 (Herbert, Lawrence, Thomas, French) 74 gross

Nearest pin (3)   : French

Nearest pin (17) :  Wood

Day 2 Individual Stableford

Winner               : Boyd 31 points

1st Runner-up   : French 29 points

2nd Runner-up : Martin 29 points

Nearest pin (3)   : White

Nearest pin (17) :  French

The former PWD Trophy was duly awarded to John Boyd (or would have been if Eric had remembered to bring it with him!) and he will have it inscribed with his name and bring (arrange for it to be brought) to next year's event.

The hotel was busy with a conference involving a fair number of Asian delegates - an appropriate backdrop for us Hong Kongers.  The rooms were comfortable, if a bit hot without air-conditioning, and the food was acceptable without being outstanding.

The cost of prizes and a contribution to the wine with dinner has used up the balance of the generous contribution from the (now defunct) Hong Kong HAGS.

Looking forward to next year, it was agreed amongst those present to aim for the first or second week of August as usual, preferably at Puckrup Hall if the package there is still competitive.  We shall again be delighted to welcome PWDGS members to participate in next year's outing as a joint event.
